Creating a modern home and getting that contemporary look isn’t as tough as it seems. You can have a decent home with a stylish appearance if you consider the basic principles. Just stick to the golden rule “less is more” and follow these simple 5 advices:
Discover the beauty of simplicity. Simplicity is essential for contemporary design and is responsible for the clean, stylish look of the homes we see in magazines. Simple does not mean boring or dull; simple means neat, balanced, restrained, composed, and classy. If simplicity evokes in your mind the vision of a naked room with a single armchair in it, you have to know that’s not the idea. Simplicity is interpreted as clean lines, harmonic shapes and uncluttered outlines. Furniture with many details (the perfect example is a baroque one) overloads the eye with its abundance of tiny parts and creates the “cluttered” look. Modern furniture tends to keep away from cluttered look and that is why it looks so fresh and relieving.
Functional=a must in the contemporary design vocabulary. Everything that doesn’t provide easy use and access just won’t do.

As we have already said, avoid clutter and stick to simplicity; make sure enough light comes through the windows. You can create the “spacious” look by using transparent and airy window coverings, plain wall treatment (it is preferable to be a light shade for small homes), and proper furniture.
With all those technological gadgets on the market today, it is almost obligatory to incorporate them in your home. Here the golden rule is in force again. Whether it’s a TV, a stereo system or a toaster, simplicity and clean lines reign supreme. In other words, look for flat panel TVs, built in DVD players, invisible smart kitchen appliances.

Individuality and personalization. What will make your home decor unique is “the personal touch” each person applies to his/her home. This personal touch may be a beautiful rug with interesting pattern, a breathtaking chandelier, a classy print or other work of art, a bright colorful vase or just a color splash in a pastel monochrome room. That is how accents are created. Whatever you choose, keep in mind that it is the part of your interior that speaks for yourself more than anything else. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment – there are no limitations. It is not necessary for the decoration you use to be in the same style as the rest of the interior.
